The Story Behind the Song

The album's darkest moment -- someone quietly cleaning up evidence of a suicide attempt before anyone else in the house wakes up, trying to hold it together long enough to get through the morning. What keeps it from being purely bleak is the refrain: "shattered but standin'," a thread of survival running underneath the despair. It's written as a direct companion to "Better Days Comin'" -- the same moment, seen from inside it.

Lyrics

(Oooo... hmmmmmm...) Here I am again — not how I planned, Everything's blurry — Can’t tell where I am. Stumble and falter — Made it down the hall, Look in the mirror — Don't see nothin' at all. When you're fallin' down deep — beaten, ripped, and torn, Lay there all day — wonderin' why you were born. Night doesn't end when the sun comes to shine, And light never makes it to some parts of my mind. The last thing I need is another damn speech, Get out a bucket, some towels, the bleach. Not too loud now — drag on back to the room, Better work fast — they’ll all be up soon. When you're fallin' down deep — beaten, ripped, and torn, Lay there all day — wonderin' why you were born. Night doesn't end when the sun comes to shine, And light never makes it to some parts of my mind. I’m in this big broken world on this long broken road, Nursin’ a long-broken heart and a small broken soul. (aaaa... mmmmm...) All the time sinkin’... Got food I’m not eatin’... In bed but not sleepin’... Cut deep and still bleedin'... Shattered but standin’! Battered but breathin'! Hammered but healin'! And I keep on hopin’! I never stopped prayin’! Kept holdin' on, believin'! That there's a brighter day comin’... (mmmm... hmmmm...) Shut the door — close the curtains — 'til the world fades away, In here all alone with the mess that I’ve made. I slide to the floor — take my head in my hands, I’d ask for some help, but y’all wouldn’t understand. (Ooooo no... wouldn't understand.)
